The South Australian Department of State Development invites proposals from South Australian based practising contemporary visual artists to join the South Australian Government’s trade mission to India in November 2017.
We are seeking two artists keen to engage with India to enrich their practice and contribute to the growth of a new relationship between South Australian and Indian visual arts.
Dates: 1 – 22 November, 2017
Cities: Mumbai, Jaipur, Udaipur and Jodhpur
Objective: Develop ongoing trans-national and intercultural links between South Australia and India and enhance the sister-state relationship between South Australia and Rajasthan.
Project: The project will deliver art workshops and create collaborative visual art works with young adults and youth in secondary schools and tertiary colleges in Mumbai, Jaipur, Udaipur and Jodhpur over three weeks. The project will be led by South Australian artist Daniel Connell and offers a great opportunity for participants to enhance their understanding of art in an international context, and to develop new networks.
Selection criteria
The Department of State Development is seeking full-time practising contemporary visual artists, emerging to mid-career, to represent South Australian visual arts excellence who:
• have an active exhibition history and a dynamic, flexible studio practice in any field
• are keen to engage with India and young people of diverse backgrounds
• have an art practice that can be shared readily in a school or public environment
• have some prior experience in delivering inclusive workshops
• will be willing to be involved in exhibitions and promotions of this program in 2018
• are able to travel on the dates indicated.
It should be noted that:
• the successful applicant will be required to pass a ‘working with children’ clearance
• it is the responsibility of the successful applicant to ensure they have essential international travel documents required to undertake this travel.
The participants will be expected to:
• be involved in conducting workshops with tertiary and secondary art students of varying (possibly disadvantaged backgrounds), potentially outside and in public settings and with the wider community
• set-up temporary exhibitions of students work and encourage local participation
• be available to speak to groups and the media in India
• be open to making new artwork, possibly public art, ephemeral or collaborative work using a variety of materials.
Remuneration – Each artist will be paid a fee of $1,500 in addition to travel, accommodation and incidental costs.
Proposals need to include the following:
• a current CV
• at least six images of recent works or a link to a website
• a one page cover letter outlining your response to the selection criteria above.
