JamFactory’s ICON series celebrates the achievements of South Australia’s most influential visual artists working in craft-based media. A jeweller and metalsmith for over 35 years, Julie Blyfield is renowned for her handcrafted sculptural objects and jewellery that is often inspired by her research into collected botanical specimens. In her practice, Blyfield uses the traditional metalsmithing techniques of chasing and repoussé. Julie Blyfield: Chasing a Passion is inspired by a recent visit to the Daintree Rainforest and Great Barrier Reef where Blyfield witnessed the incredible diversity of the ancient forests and marine corals. The exhibition will focus on the concept of ‘life and loss’ through reference to coral motifs, and reflect on the fragility and preciousness of life, thereby drawing attention to the plight of the Reef in an era of climate change and coral bleaching events.
