2024 South Australian Living Artist (SALA) Festival exhibition: Light from a Fire, a Blaze- Kartla-Yarlu is a poignant collection of images first displayed during the Fire and the Floods photographic exhibition, shining light on the state's devastating Bangor Fire 10years on. Award-winning photojournalist Kellie's images captured the Bangor fire as it burnt it's way through more than 35,000 hectares of the Southern Flinders Ranges- Wapma Thura, on a path of destruction when a controlled burn jumped containment lines in inaccessible and difficult terrain. Dedicated firefighters and proactive community members kept the fires from enveloping local townships and properties under threat in and around Wirrabara, Stone Hut, Laura, Telowie, Nelshaby, Napperby, Beetaloo Valley, and Warnertown near Kellie’s own farming community. Thus while Kartla-Yarlu is a Nukunu language term describing light from a fire, a blaze, referring to the month-long glow of the fires on Wapma Thura, it is also a metaphorical reference to the healing power of community spirit- the light within. Light from a Fire, a Blaze- Kartla-Yarlu aims to invoke conversations and serves a timely reminder of the need to care for the natural environment and one another in both the good times and those more difficult.
