Ever since their placement in 1977, I have passed the ‘Spheres’ in haste with no more than a thought….. There are the Silver Balls.
It wasn’t until I stopped to photograph the Spheres as part of my Rendezvous Series, that I noticed and suddenly appreciated the ‘Clever’ of the Spheres designed by Vienna Artist, Bert Flugelman. It was an awakening.

The ‘Spheres’ reflect the beauty of the Mall which I had never noticed before. The buildings, vibrant colours and the busy purpose of people. I had seen them but NOT SEEN them. In one painting alone I capture a dual aspect of the Mall through the reflections . In each painting the buildings are a reliable constant. But constant changes of the natural elements make every picture different.

The sky creates the mood and light. The seasonal changes of the foliage determine the density and interchangeable aspects. The people add personality and soul.

I have titled the exhibition ‘The News of the Mall’ by painting the North, South, East and West dual aspects through the reflections on the Spheres.

My paintings are fun and full of colour and yet are a telltale moment in history. Whatever is reflected in the Spheres today, this moment , this second, will not be reflected in its entirety tomorrow. I have captured that moment in time which is today but, in the future, will be yesterday and yesteryear. The way it was!
