Heavy Is the Crown features Willis Chimano. One quarter of Africa's biggest boy band, Sauti Sol. Having to keep the truth of who he is concealed in order to build the institution of the band, Willis is now standing in both his truth and divine power. Across the African continent homosexuality is still illegal in most countries with community members facing rape, torture and imprisonment. Willis Chimano through grace and healing is leading the way for members of the LGBTQI+ community across the continent to be seen, heard and recognised as equals. Photographer Allison Coles has beautifully captured the essence of how heavy the crown can be for people in societies where you are viewed as less than and through her exhibition demonstrates the pain and the hope narratives and exhibitions such as this can create for those without a voice.
