Shut Your Eyes and See
For this year’s SALA exhibition, we’re taking inspiration from a simple but intriguing line in Ulysses by James Joyce: “Shut your eyes and see.” It’s a gentle reminder that not all understanding comes from looking outward — often, it comes from the memories, feelings, and stories we carry with us.
In Shut Your Eyes and See, local artists explore the many ways we make sense of the world beyond what our eyes take in. Some works draw on treasured memories or moments that have stayed with us. Others celebrate imagination, daydreaming, or the quiet instincts that guide us through everyday life.
The exhibition brings together a wide mix of styles and voices, reflecting the creativity and warmth of our community. Each piece offers its own take on what it means to “see” with more than sight, whether that’s through emotion, reflection, or simply paying attention to the things that matter most.
Visitors are invited to slow down, enjoy the variety of perspectives, and connect with artworks that speak to shared human experiences. It’s an exhibition about noticing, remembering, and feeling, and discovering how much richness lives behind closed eyes.
